It’s late, but it’s here! Things have really slowed down for me with making videos in August, just due to major house projects, energy levels, and a heatwave. I’ll try to be back with a regular weekly wrap-up soon!

    1. I'm not really bothered about Award lists and the like these days, but then I learned that the inaugural LeGuin Prize for Fiction is happening this year! (On the 21st of October too, her birthday apparently, which is kinda neat given both my mother and I are October women lol). And for once, I'm actually going to purposefully read every single nominee (not too too hard given there are only 9, and I've already read one of them, Elder Race) for the award. So I was wondering if you had any plans to do something similar?
(I'm also really tempted by that Ignotofsky book about computing).

    2. I really want to read more by Yoon Ha Lee but as always getting around to it with everything else is always a challenge. The Embers of War trilogy I did enjoy overall but definitely understand your issues. The feel and overall atmosphere of the books changes subtly after the first I feel. I always look forward to seeing your enthusiasm.

    3. Rachel, hello. I just read embers of war, last month I think. So it’s a bummer to hear that the trilogy goes downhill because I really like that first book and was looking forward to the other two books.

    4. Sush & I are halfway through The History of Computers and enjoying it (but it is long)! The Professor Next Door isn't my favorite in the Cider Bar Sisters series, but the third act breakup is definitely a feature of most of Jackie Lau's novels. And I was pretty meh on most of the Hugo novellas this year too!

    5. I've probably said it a million times, but I wish YHL would stick to writing adult SFF. From what I understand, he doesn't enjoy it, he's not good at it, but it pays so much better, which is a valid reason for doing it anyway. It's just so disappointing reading the Dragon Pearl series and imagining what it would be like if it was adult YHL! I did like Tiger Honor more than Dragon Pearl, mainly for the protagonist as you said, but I also went in with very low expectations after Dragon Pearl disappointed me. I was trying to think if the main issue for me is expectations. It's YHL, so I'm assuming it'll wow me. If I read it without knowing who the author was, I'd probably think it was a fun MG space fantasy.

    6. Aliette De Bodard is hit or miss for me. I remember enjoying Fireheart Tiger more than the one I read before that, but can't remember which one that was now. Oops. UNderdeveloped is a good description though.
