Miyo and Kudou look so happy together! Miyo’s inner dialogue in the manga when Kouji asked if she remembered what he said was she knew what he wanted to hear but…..and told him she didn’t remember.

What a nerve Kouji has to had to bring up his unrequired confession after he did nothing to help Miyo all those years when she needed it most. And now, when she is happy with another man, he wants to make things difficult for her with his unrequired confession? Doesn't he understand that he was the only person from her childhood whom Miyo considered to be a friend. That she has lack of self-confidence and it's difficult for her to say "No" to other people, especially to him? And he wanted to make her to hurt his feelings by rejecting him? Or did he expect that she could not say "No" to him? If so, what would he thinks would happen? He didn't has guts to stand up for Miyo against his weak father, so no way he will oppose Kudo. Than what he expected is that Miyo herself will ruin her relationship with Kudo. And then what? I bet he is not brave enough even to brake up with Miyo's sister. So after making Miyo ruin her relations with Kudo he would likely backpedal as he always did. This guy is a creep. It's good that Miyo has gained enough self-confidence, was able to read his intention to confess and rejected him.

I'm happy she rejected him too. She's right where she needs to be. She's with the one who loves her and would make her grow. I could imagine with the other guy they remaining soft, pitiful and weak, her always sorry and him always weak and can't protect her and they steady getting taken advantage of and manipulated. He can't even stand up to her little sister! I really hope he changes, but I'm excited thinking she has a hidden power that's gonna be released thanks to the love and support she's getting from the man she's with now which is gonna help her growth.
I cheered when she turned him down. Why on earth would she choose a guy that didn’t have the guts to stand up for her over Kudou who rescued her and treated her with dignity and respect?
I think the author wrote on Twitter said that the reason why Miyo didn't remember his confession was "didn't have the emotional capacity by then to think about love."

While I understand that Kouij was an innocent victim entangled up in this mess as Miyo, he still played a role by not defending her and lowering her already broken self-esteem. I get that this was set in an era where going against your family was taboo but he absolutely failed to stand up for her and just watched her family’s cruelty inflicted upon her from the sidelines. Though, hdid somewhat redeemed himself by informing Kudou of the situation and rescuing her in time and I’ll give him credit for that but still. I’m glad that Miyo rejected him because he clearly needed to work on himself more by learning to protect others better and not letting being doormat. It still makes me sad that despite everything he still loves her but unfortunately, he’s gonna now spend the rest of his life in a loveless marriage with her little sister.
