Its mostly the way you digested the content that gave you this take. You may disagree, but I think people can interpret art incorrectly.
Everyone goes into the show thinking that it will be about super powers and escaping the island. After watching it, you should have realised that the show isn't about that at all.
You've missed a lot of things. Not just themes. Deconstructions followed by reconstructions, an otherworldly soundtrack, its production is almost unreal. The art, animation, framing, direction, pacing, voice acting are sublime. Episode 8 has to be one of my favourite episodes of anything ever. Everything seems so intentionally selected, yet its almost unexplainable.
The greatest word I have for this Anime is esoteric. For you to call it mid almost entirely because the narrative wasn't linear enough for you to follow, is exactly why people are upset.
