The Story …

In early 1939, Nazi Germany’s most powerful battleship, the Bismarck, is launched, beginning a new era of German sea power.

Two years later, after the war has begun, British naval intelligence discovers Bismarck and the heavy cruiser Prinz Eugen are about to sail into the North Atlantic to attack Allied convoys.

From an underground war room in London, Captain Jonathan Shepard coordinates the hunt for the dreaded Bismarck. Later, the two German warships encounter HMS Hood and HMS Prince of Wales in the Denmark Strait, and the four warships engage in a deadly gun duel.

The battle results in the annihilation and violent disintegration of the Hood, shocking combatants on both sides. Now Prince of Wales is alone and is fired on by the two German ships. However, it manages to inflict damage on Bismarck’s bow. Bismarck returns fire, destroying the Prince of Wales bridge.

Eventually, the Prince of Wales emits a smoke screen behind which to retreat. Bismarck and Prinz Eugen also retreat, but they are shadowed by the cruisers HMS Suffolk and HMS Norfolk using radar. Later, Prinz Eugen breaks away and heads toward the port of Brest, in occupied France, while Bismarck turns and fires at the British cruisers to provide cover as it escapes. The attack forces the cruisers to retreat.

An air assault from the carrier HMS Victorious damages Bismarck’s fuel tanks, but the vessel is otherwise largely undamaged.

What happens next? …

  2. Every now and then the Brits make a good movie and this is one of them…The Germans had a bit of bad luck with their surface war ships and should have used all that steel on their subs. None of their battle wagons survived..

  3. I remember my father, who was a Dutch seaman, told my mother: I have reserved 2 tickets for the premiére in the biggest Movie theater in the Hague in 1960. Both, in rather official dress, went to the show and my father was very impressed at the time and told me all about it. I saw the film in the mean time many times, its an outstanding classic and true, heroic drama. Shute, I never forget it, shute!

  4. A truly great movie. Shares the credit for sinking the German flagship between the combatants and the planners. Even allows us to sympathise a bit with the Germans.
    Thank you, PrimeSite!

  5. Shame about the horrendous audio distortion from the digital compression (also image lacks temporal resolution too – but not as bad as digital TV). Hopefully the original media will be safely preserved until the day comes when it can be digitised properly without loss

  6. You wouldn't get much work done with Dana Wynter in the office… never has a uniform kept a mans flag at full mast 👍

  7. Britain could have had six HMS Vanguard fast Battleships, with nine sixteen inch guns, instead of treaty Battleships. Our enemies didn't adhere to treaties. We must learn from the past.

  8. Thanks for uploading. shame we can't see it in the original format (without the edges chopped off) and in better quality than 480p

  9. Esmond Knight, who plays Captain Leach was aboard the Prince of Wales in actual life and lost his eyesight during the battle.

  10. Because of secrecy laws at the time, and for many years after the sinking the real story about how the course and plans of the German Navy were constantly read and de-cyphered by the staff at Bletchley Park code breaking centre. Bismark was never "accidentally" spotted by aircraft. the Royal Navy knew exactly where she was, but had to hide the code breaking from the Germans, so the story was invented to cover this up.

  11. For those unaware There is an Artist that sampled Dana Wynters dialogue from this film … She was never credited on the release as i have the vinyl . The Auranaut – People want to be needed .

  12. Another great, old movie! Thank you!! The sinking of the Bismarck was a lesson I learned as a youth and I have never forgotten that no matter how big and strong you may think you are, your reign will only last for a while and defeat can come very suddenly and unexpected. I've read various books on the sinking of the Bismarck and the ships involved, the horrific loss of the HMS Hood, etc. .. once again, we who now are here to watch this movie owe our very existence to these brave men and all who fought the Axis powers during WWII. Thank you so much for sharing this movie, I could easily watch it again, if only to watch them loading those massive guns, the footage is fascinating!

  13. Great movie, but not exactly accurate in the scene of the HMS Hood sinking. Capt. Lindemann took control when Luchens wouldn't return fire.
