🦋 Jim Tucker is a Professor of Psychiatry and Neurobehavioral Sciences at the University of Virginia (UVA), where he’s also the Director of the Division of Perceptual Studies (DOPS). He’s most well-known for his work studying cases of children who seem to recall memories from a previous life. He’s written two books on the subject: ‘Return to Life’ and ‘Life Before Life’, both of which can be found in his two in one book called ‘Before: Children’s Memories of Previous Lives’. Jim’s work studying this phenomenon, which was formerly carried out by Dr. Ian Stevenson, is incredibly compelling, shockingly convincing, and wildly unacknowledged by the mainstream.

“I think if you look at the strongest cases as a group, they provide pretty solid evidence that at least in some cases children do have knowledge, in a way that appears to be memories, of a past life.” – Dr. Jim Tucker

  1. Ben, that glorious moustache (which I am clearly jealous of) and it’s perfect curls is too much of a distraction from this excellent content.

  2. Pure speculation (food for thought 💭)

1:04:03 I've been wondering if consciousnesses can split itself amongst different persons. There might be "one" consciousness that splits itself overtime. The more we feel connected with someone, the more "recent" the split is (see binary trees). The baby might have inherited a split of his uncle "spark of consciousness" and get the full version of it when the uncled passed away.

I don't know, the possesion hypothesis is scary 😳

Thanks for the interview and for asking my questions 😊

    Wonderful job 👏

  3. Great job on interviewing Dr. Tucker. I like how you said that if someone mentioned reincarnation a few years ago you would have been put off. I was the same way until I read the Leininger's book back in 2010. Honestly, I had forgotten about it because life got in the way, but a few years ago I found the book again (it was lost for years before reappearing in plain sight). I reread it, but this time I did other research and stumbled upon DOPS and Jim Tucker, and I've been hooked ever since. Again, reincarnation didn't appeal to me, but after the Leininger's book & Jim Tuck/DOPS, I can't think of too many conversations I'd rather have (if any).

  4. Ben, I am also glad you asked about multiple personalities. I was very close to someone who I have no doubt has dissociative identity disorder. If you had asked me ten years ago if I thought it could be multiple consciousness living in one body I would have treated the idea with contempt prior to investigation, but now I believe it is as good an explanation as any, especially considering that the brain does not appear to be the progenitor of consciousness.

  5. I'd be interested to hear a skeptical response. 2300 documentable cases of this phenomenon is honestly not a lot considering the population. I've been hearing about this since the 90s via Art Bell's show…you'd think it would've become more apparent and easier to document with the advent of social networking.

  6. There's a thing that puzzles me about these cases. This isn't said in a spirit of debunking. Not at all. I genuinely think there's an anomaly here which, no matter its interpretation, must have profound implications.

However, this puzzles me, perhaps even disturbs me a bit about these cases. It's a little hard to put into words, but I'll try. I imagine (I may be wrong about this) that if I went to another realm beyond death and returned, the LAST thing that would be on my mind is the like of "why are you giving me cheesecake? I never liked cheesecake" (I am essentialising a pattern here, not quoting a specific case). Or, listen, uncle Ted hid his wallet behind the fridge in the old kitchen, and lo and behold there's the wallet. Instead, I'd be saying stuff like "guys, guys, never mind about all that – WE DON'T FLIPPIN' DIE, THERE'S LIFE AFTER DEATH, I SAW GOD, I SAW A *WHOLE OTHER WORLD*, I can't even BEGIN to tell you what I expeerienced!!"

Instead we get this sort of thing: "Why are you giving me onions with my gravy? My name's Ben and I never took onions with my gravy!" I don't get it. There's just something about this that doesn't compute. Now I know that this material is evidential, whereas the other discussions I have mentioned are not (so there's that) but in a way that just fuels my suspicion. I STILL find it hard to believe that these mundane things would somehow be uppermost in my mind if I had seen whole other realms, and particularly if they were as glorious as seems to be suggested in so many NDEs. There's something about all this that is almost like something gaming the situation to steer our thought patterns in particular ways, and I find that a bit perturbing. The benign interpretation would be that the phenomenon wants us to focus on the evidence. But what do we mean by "the phenomenon" and how does it happen to have its own agency in that way? The more problematic interpretation might be that the entire thing is a device by the collective unconscious (or whatever) and steering our thoughts in a particular direction (whether literally true or not) is the game that it's about.

  7. Thank you for making this interview! Your questions were on point. That's the first time I heard about Jim and his work is really impressive. Finally there is some kind of continuation to the work that was done by Michael Newton who used hypnotherapy for analysis of past lives and lives between lives and wrote several books on that. Unfortunately, Michael passed away several years ago and I am being skeptical to the works of people who claim to use his techniques of hypnosis while at the same time offering services of "quantum healing" etc. Will definitely read Jim's books to get another view at this phenomena

  8. Hey’ are past lives also memories of family members that have passed away or are they about people that the child simply would have no way of obtaining these details.

  9. Early Christianity believed in reincarnation.

However, in the 6th century, the Eastern Roman Emperor Justinian I managed to declare reincarnation a heresy and imprisoned Pope Vigilius, who supported this belief at the time. He also began to remove reincarnation from the Bible.

Scholars speculate that the primary reason for rejecting reincarnation was the fear that it would undermine the significance of Christ’s redemption and reduce the church’s revenue from the unity of state and church.
