What’s Going on With Shipping?
April 6, 2023

In this episode, Sal Mercogliano – maritime historian at Campbell University (@campbelledu) and former merchant mariner – discusses current salvage operations underway to remove the 1400 tons of methanol from one of the two barges remaining pinned against the dam at the Falls of the Ohio in Louisville, Kentucky.

  1. The actual way to relieve the dam, from the barge bent around it, is to build a cofferdam around the area concerned, … then pumping out the ethanol, … then, attempt to drag the bent barge out, of the way of the dam, pulling it sideways alongside to the shore, and then up onto the ground, … the amount of big catfish will be feeding on whatever amount of corn has leaked from the barn, …and it may take several levels of tugs, to get the barge to release its suction from the water, induced capture, …

  2. Hi Sal, great channel to find on You Tube, would like to wonder about situation in Indo-Pac areas regarding commercial traffic, and piracy. As I personaly was attacked by chinese pirates during sailing on bulk carrier inside territorial waters of PRC 4 years ago. It will be worth to think about Corsairs comeback.

  3. How about talking about earth movements and consequential bridge collapses and unprecedented water level movements and fluctuations. Ever heard of the New Madrid fault line??? So what in the inner solar system causing havoc at this time? Look at what is going on in the Suez Canal, water receding greatly in Israel, etc…

    Happy Easter and God Bless.

  4. Great update Sal. Your presentations are always interesting to me. In 2016 you would have enjoyed reporting a story on Marquette Tranpertations Stephen L. Colby. It hit a river obstruction and water breeched the resulting hole. The pilot made it to the shore of LeClaire Iowa where it bottomed out. No one was physically hurt. I was absolutely fascinated watching the 2.5 week rescue operation. The local news media absolutely blew it on reporting a great human intrest story. I think I have a hundred photos. 2 years after the accident I saw the Stephen L. Colby steaming by my house. I went and grabbed my camera and got a great picture. One of my takeaways. It takes great effort to keep bread on the table.

  5. Surely, if water is getting into that grain barge, the grain will swell? So introducing the danger that it will burst open it's hatches if not the hull?

  6. Thanks for your insight to these issues. As I only live a Stone throw away from this. As a child I have climbed, slid, and fish at these dams my whole life. Fishing is the best at the Falls because of its higher oxygen in the water for going over all the rock. Because of the path way to the canal we have suffered many barges sinking, being broken loose and few going over the dam in the more recent years. I had many questions? I wanted to see for myself. Mainly the water if it was leaking? So from my house I live just at K&I R.R bridge. So my son and I drove around at the key area I know will float alot of dead fish. We looked all over. I can say we did not see anything. Which is great news for All! Fishing is great here in lower water! We also stopped at the entrance of the Portland canal. We saw barges had many spots that have impacted. So what I'm saying is that this happens more than people really understand. Yesterday while me and the boys went fishing,we drove along Ohio. We noticed they must be holding back the traffic right now? Because of the work being done. Barges were stacked up river along both sides parked on the upper river island and banks. I have many pictures I had wished to share with areas that were possible impact spots. And angles from river views. Thanks again for your assistance with the issue at hand.

  7. From WDRB Friday 4/7: According to a news release, crews pumped methanol from the tank barge into a receiver tank. Salvage experts then determined that enough methanol had been removed to safely pull the barge off the dam structure.

  8. the methaol barge will float higher as its off loaded helping to pump off the max amount of product, to the point they can hook to it and pull it outta there

  9. Why are the gates still open for that spillway? It's the hydraulic pressure of the water flowing through them that are holding the barges against the dam. This is Fluid Dynamics 101! Had the gates been closed immediately, when the barges weren't crushed by the pressure, they could have been removed days ago, and the methanol barge wouldn't be the hazard it is now. Waiting allowed the barge to intrude into the gate opening! This was, in my opinion, as a retired Industrial Design Engineer, incompetence on the part of those responsible for the recovery. It should be SOP to close gates IMMEDIATELY if possible to prevent this predicament.

  10. So I am a nerd and if I remember correctly the hydro plant has 8 turbines in operation, it was built in the mid 1920’s and all eight turbines are freaking original which I find amazing. They were recently overhauled and the plant produces over 110MW.

  11. Thanks Sal. Excellent explanation. Hope this situation is resolved safely and quickly. Well done to Unified Command for their distribution of information.

  12. Train derailments, barges sinking? Do you think the Russians are just going to sit on their behinds while Biden pours arms into Ukraine?
