When I was reading the novel, I saw it coming. They’re two idiot teenagers with zero relationship experience, who turned their own relationship into a competition between friends and lovers, and gave themselves only a month to settle it. Not to mention that it was made clear that Renako’s ideal best friend and Mai’s ideal lover were almost identical except for one thing: the physical intimacy. On the one side, you’ve got Renako who was worried about crossing a line, not because she dislikes the physical intimacy, but because she’s worried she’ll give in to temptation (and let Mai win). On the other hand, if Mai doesn’t push Renako’s boundaries, they’ll be caught in a stalemate and no one will be satisfied with that. Considering all the number of ways this could have gone, this might actually be one of the better outcomes.
After all, like I said, they’re both idiot teens. Without outside interference, the only way they were going to learn is when they really screwed up. The real question is, can they learn the right lessons from their mistakes?
