The Story …

The crew of an American submarine are on a reconnaissance mission, photographing Japanese installations through a periscope camera.

When attacked by the Japanese (with similarities to USS Perch) the submarine is scuttled and the crew is captured.

Tortured by the Japanese, with the help of British and Australian prisoners the submarine’s officers make an escape bid to get their information to the Allies. The film ends with footage of the Battle of the Coral Sea (1942), which according to the film, was made possible through the information brought back by the submariners. …

  1. Why did they have to embellish the truth? Only ONE Japanese carrier was sunk and it was only a small escort carrier. The U.S suffered a tactical defeat at Coral Sea but it was a strategic victory in preventing the invasion of Port Moresby. The most important outcome of the battle was that they knocked two fleet carriers out of commission so that they only had to face four and not six carriers in the Midway battle.

  2. Good movie, but complete fiction. The information about the Japanese carriers entering the Coral Sea and the invasion of Port Moresby came from US codebreakers, lead by Lt. Cmdr. Joseph Rochefort, at Pearl Harbor. Adm. Nimitz is the one that decided to place two US carriers at Coral Sea in an attempt to intercept the Japanese forces headed there. No pins on a map pointing to Coral Sea. No submarine surrender. No POW escape and rescue (the only successful mass escape by US POWs occurred in the Philippines in 1943).

  3. 24:08 The sub crew, preparing for the Battle of the Coral Sea in 1942, is contacted by Japanese divers wearing scuba gear, which was invented in 1943 by Jacques Cousteau and Emile Gagnan.

  5. CLIFF ROBERTSON >> PT 109 > DEVILS BRIGADE ETC !!!!!!!! GREAT MOVIE !!!!!!!!!!! TO ALL WHO SERVED IN WWI > THANK YOU FOR YOUR SERVICE & RIP TO ALL WHO MADE THE ULTIMATE SACRIFICE !!!!!!!!!! TO ALL THE FAMILIES > THANK YOU & CONDOLENCES !!!!!!!!!

  6. Don't waste your time — the actual reference to the Battle of the Coral Sea is ONLY in the last 5 minutes of the film and is itself full of historical inaccuracies. Most of the movie is a silly Hollywood submarine and then prison camp yarn starring a young Cliff Robertson.

  7. the highlight of this movie for me, is seeing a young Tom Laughlin in the crew. i grew up watching the Billy Jack movies, and will always have a great admiration for Tom and his family.
