Resident Evil 4 Remake Review

  1. The title announcer missing is such a huge sin to the series. Crowbcat was right, you can't have a soulful Resident Evil game without the announcer menacingly saying "RESIDENT EVIL".

  2. It would have been cool if moving and reloading could make the reload fail, Leon drops his mag or something

  3. The story is ass and Leon is a piece of wood, the Merchant is too much of a bro and Krauser keeps drilling into your head how he's your superior when the original he was just a former teammate.

  4. Not gonna lie I was absolutely stunned and flabbergasted by that exquisite Spanish pronunciation at 31:57 Seriously that was an absolute PERFECT pronouncing of the name Salazar

  5. The ındustry these days loves to keep 10 out of 10 scores when they see a working game released because the last few years was filled with halfbaked crap. I still hate the concept of remaking or remastering something and selling it for an actual game price. I don't remember the original very well so i don't care about the differences or additons on the remake but can we actually going to get a reform out there or a new critic site that actually reviews games and not give them 10/10 so much video game scores ?

  6. You're a fine wordsmith. Thanks for giving your reviews some literary emphasis… Stranger.

  7. Man I feel your so good at looking at details that I don't think about but is still Important like the UI of the Suitcase being so different. I haven't played the original RE4 yet but I can't wait to try it soon

  8. Resident Evil 4 is a legendary game from the glory days. Resident Evil 4 Remake is a better than average game (when compared to other modern games) but is not nor will ever be legendary.

  9. This game is an improvement in almost every single way. Even most of the hardcore fanbase is agreeing on it.This is not a review. This is overly critical next level whining.

  10. I think what really helped me embrace the new changes for RE4R, instead of hoping for a more faithful remake, was seeing how the general change of the village's layout affected the story. The lake is a big example of this, seeing how not only the lake connected to more places like the cabin we find Luis in, but also being visibly close to the castle. Seeing these upcoming locations gave a returning player like me a look of awe, thinking of how they were going to adapt something coming up, while also just looking generally more cohesive of a location in general.

Even better was taking this newly designed village, and changing up how you explored it. It sounds like I'm overreacting, but my jaw dropped when I realized they threw Luis and Leon into the abandoned factory, instead of some random house in the valley. Sure, both of these locations were nearby each other, but the simple act of moving through a familiar location differently made me realize that I wasn't going to know what changes would be around the corner, and what they might surprise me with next.

  11. The 'high road/low road' thing is something I noticed A LOT about RE4make. In the original you ALWAYS had room to reposition yourself if cornered by ganados, the remake OTOH is hurtfully linear in its areas, which is most obvious in the island sections

  12. Really love amd appreciate the deeper understanding and realness displayed in this video (I really agreed a lot but not always personally speaking). Maintaining that quality, with even now being no different, even when it leads to not the most conventional takes bring given during a certain trend is why I truly love and respect your channel.

  13. Kinda hit the nail on the head with Remake's UI design. As much as I love the modern RE games/remakes, the very minimalistic style for the UI is something I'm not a big fan of. I love UI/menu design that tries to have a unique identity, it's part of the artistic process to evoke whatever kind of feeling you wish for the player to have when playing the game. The original RE4's UI and menu design was great, so it's sad to see basically all that identity stripped away.

  14. Mendez fight becoming less intense ? In the original all you needed was 4 incendiary grenades to kill a him.

  15. I'm a little sad you dislike the cheesy one-liners so much. Not only did they fit the B-movie action flick vibe frankly both versions have (though the remake is obviously a bit more serious), it also felt like very subtle characterization for Leon. When you consider what he's gone through, it almost comes off as a coping mechanism to me. He's been through hell and has to go through every more hellish stuff for his FIRST MISSION no less as a government agent. In my experience humor can be the best way to deal with experiences and feelings our squishy brains couldn't otherwise handle.

  16. 32:44 NOT having south American accents is an improvement to you? The fuck? You one of those asswipes who whine about how accents are offensive or some shit?

  17. IMO almost 20 years is more than enough time for a remake of some kind.
For as much as I want Capcom to make something original right now I'm super happy that we got this master class remake.
I think that they nailed a ton of the remixed content and I don't care about the cut stuff because I got bothered by that when I wasn't having fun with what was currently in front of me and that barely happened.
I think the people looking at this game very negatively played WAY too much of the original and wanna nick pick everything so they can justify why a game made nearly 20 years ago is better than a game made today that nearly everyone else is calling a 9/10.
This game is solid fun, only really 'unfun' if you wanna bitch about how stream lined this experience is.
"The UI is boring compared to the og. The weapon storage system makes no sense. Moving and shooting takes the stress away of a huge crowd of enemies coming at you so it SHOULD have stayed worse."

  18. I'm really enjoying the game right now. I wasn't ''in love'' with the original, but I did come at this remake with the expectation that it was going to live in the original's shadow more than say, REmake 1 and 2. I was kinda right in the end, but I loved it more than I thought. I also feel this game was going to replace it, it feels more like a compliment, which appears to be a common opinion. I would say the only thing I disagree on is that I kinda liked the El-Gigante section at the Castle Battlements. I saw it as a comparison to that section in the original where the catapults are coming at you while you're going through the tower knocking out the planks of wood in the gears. It's more visual-candy than anything, but I thought it was cool.

  19. One thing I like about the remake is Leon's concerns about how the RC incident and government training robbed him of who he was. His personal conflict ties in well with Luis' infatuation with _Don Quioxte_, which concerns a man who's obsessed with romanticism of being an Knight in an age where everyone's enwrapped in cynicism. Quixote's sidekick, Sancho, is a realist, who is ultimate changed by Quixote towards the end of the story. This transitions well into him getting killed by Krauser, who is changed to have been Leon's master in his government training. It's implied in Krauser's dialogue that he resented Leon's optimism and sense of righteousness. Symbolically, it works perfectly that Krauser's the one to kill Luis, the one who would have embraced the man Leon once was.

  20. Great review Charlie. Very thorough. You make great points. I think most reviewers treated the game as just a game for it's own merits, which is a bit odd because clearly the original is a public part of this games development but I get where they're coming from. Of course, you've got extensive gaming history knowledge so you I see why you weighed it with that in mind. I see this game as a sort of a loving tribute and while it would have been incredible to see a notable improvement like the other Resident Evil remakes, I feel it probably didn't HAVE to. Would have been nice though. I love that they fleshed out tertiary characters more.

Also, excuse me, what? Is that some Umbrella Corps at 5:47?

  21. I didn't see the Regenerator running down the hallway like you mentioned. My first encounter with them was reading that note and being like "Oh they're probably talking about some boss I have to fight later –" and then when I walked out of the room the friggin' thing just charged at me out of nowhere. Never played the original game. Probably the most frightening thing to happen to me in the entire franchise so far lmao. Those things are creepy as hell. I will say you can most likely avoid that sequence like I did.

  22. I get a lot of what you’re saying, but I always feel like it’s nostalgia talking when people say they prefer the original while essentially describing it as worse. Is the OG Mendez fight really better if the camera makes it so that you can’t really keep track of him? Is that really a positive?

I also much prefer the new combat system, you have so many more options rather than CCing with a single headshot -> kick, and panic shotgun. Doesn’t matter if you need to plant to shoot if a single shot can take care of any enemies near you. In the remake you gotta stay on your toes and get ready to react, with the more aggressive enemies, parrying, and not guaranteed headshot stuns. I also prefer the full degree of character movement, plus you still get panic shotgun

I love OG and I love the remake, I feel like they’re both great games and would recommend them to anyone. I think they’re different enough to stand on their own, and are both worth experiencing for their own sake

  23. Literally the only thing that really bothered me was the forced walking segment at the end of the game. Other than that everything was pretty good. Not as magical as the OG but still damn good

  24. The village at night is not as atmospheric like the original? Are you for real? The original looks very muddy and brown whereas the new version has hails of wind and thunderstorm and is incredibly lifelike, you FEEL like you’re there. Not to mention going through the village section at twilight looked so great with all the added new stuff. Not even gonna bother watching the rest.

  25. Hey Charlie amazing video as always. These days I’ve been doing a marathon re watching videos of you and all i wanted to ask you, after seeing Trace memory if you are still gonna do a video of Hotel Dusk / Last Window

  26. So the whole video is basically critisizing the fact that it's a remake , "rehash" of the old game. But that's the part where I heavily disagree: Re4 2023 doesn't play anything like the original and it doesn't even feel like it, hell even plot is not completely the same. It's virtually a brand new game – it plays like a new game, it looks like a new game and it feels like it.

  27. I'm absolutely not qualified to say anything about either games, but… I guess, a lot of things that made the OG what it was were a product if the time. And I mean that in a good way. But that's not gonna happen ever again. Even if they pulled a Demon's Souls and just transplanted the code onto new graphics… well, that would probably be worse, actually. We can all rave about how sick and strategic the "can't move while shooting" thing was, but, realistically, that shit's just old, man. And hell, I don't know what the hell they would have to do to have this be as much of a revolution as the original game was.

So like, I get the criticisms, but no shot one wouldn't expect the game to be like this.

  28. Honestly, the thing that scares me the most about this game, is how it shows how it's only a matter of time until we get a resident evil 6 remake…

  29. I don't know GB, how can we be expected to stop dwelling on the great games of the past when you can't even tell me Metroid Dread, the future, is the best Metroid ever made?

I'm kidding, sort of. I'm not entirely sure if Dread is quite a 10/10, and it's just an example anyways, but I do think it brings up a case that you can't just "make" a 10/10 consciously. So while I disagree with RE4 remake getting a 10/10 like it's simply expected, I also don't think it's fair to complain about the lack of earth shattering, mind blowing releases. It's a much bigger ask than one might think. If it were easy, Bethesda wouldn't keep releasing Skyrim, and the Zelda franchise wouldn't take way too long to come out with another title.

  30. I love it every single small detail. Reminds me of the time when me and my dad would play back in 2005. Now I’m playing it with my son in 2023.

  31. Yeah he tremendous fight he totally goes back and forth in the second phase.. I just went through it again.. they changed a lot of the Dynamics in the boss fights and the general gameplay between the difficultly options, and they don't really mention it in the menu and I wish they had cuz what list says kind of like a valve style annoyance actually does add significant gameplay factors as well.. in addition to the valve style annoyance of course. I remember the the delago fight being the easiest kind of dumbest thing on standard difficulty and on hardcore, I just remember being utterly destroyed by it, granted on professional I also did that in one go, but I was also at a point where I hadn't died yet so..

I'm actually not sure about professional difficulty.. it feels easier, but that might just be because I'm trying harder without the auto save.. oddly enough I actually do not recall him, Mendez of course, I don't recall him crossing to the other side of the room outside of some of the trapeze tentacle strikes even on the hardcore difficulty.. but, honestly that might have just been because he's so easy to kill in general, and for some reason the last time I played it I just kept screwing it up giving him a lot more time.. so who knows, but I can attest very very clearly very clearly lol that there's significant changes to certain things that are definitely not listed and definitely make the game more interesting as the difficulties go up.

  32. I enjoyed this remake a lot. I still vastly prefer the original but I enjoyed the remake and the new things they did with it. Great video
