The Cancellation of Webtoon’s ‘Wind Breaker’

In July 2025, Naver Webtoon saw the Yongseok Jo comic Wind Breaker canceled. And what doomed Wind Breaker? Plagiarism and tracing other works, such as the Tokyo Ghoul manga. Jahyeon ‘Jay’ Jo, Shelly Scott, Minu Yun, and the whole Humming Bird Crew were left on an indefinite cliffhanger.

And this is far from the first time this has happened in the webcomic community – but why does this keep happening in online comics and manhwa? Well, turns out, it’s the same problem plaguing the manga and anime industry…

  1. what? im not gonna lie ive been reading since chapter 1 and i felt some panels looked similar to other works but at this point im invested to the story 8 years in, i need this to end gang

  2. The kenjaku arthe traced aint from jujutsu kaisen manga . its a fanart from an indonesian artist . SHE IS THE GOAT MAYAPANDA / maya_panda94

  3. Plagiarism is one thing, however you are in a world of disappointment if you think many detailed backgrounds in manga especially are "hand drawn". Some are traced and some are literally pics with comic filters. Tons of tutorials how to do it in CSP or ibisPaint.

  4. Lol blaming crunch schedule after got caught tracing art, do they think the artists that the art they traced didn't finish their work under time crunch too?
    Dumbass.

  5. Hopefully he can comeback from this scandal like yuki suetsugu, she was caught plagurising for eden no Hana then after she apologised went away for a bit on hiatus she came back strong with Chihayafuru

  6. It is because the anime that i don't know the name it's not. That similar you know the wind breaker is different it's has a slice of life you know

  7. The editor of the work will recover, but the artist's reputation is possibly forever ruined…
And it would have been one thing to reference your favorite panels or artworks from other creators, but one to one tracing… 😕

  8. A bit of tracing and using references isn't really an issue, unless you're drawing directly from your head a good portion of the art anyone consumes is from a reference and idk how to tell you this but peoples favorite tiktokers and instagram artists never source their reference or even post the pictures they yoinked from pinterest, an app where people also don't source names of photographers or models. Some of peoples favorite graphics are traced outlines of people or objects then stylized. I don't think this artist committed something entirely egregious, he traced and used images for reference, but the end product was different enough.

  9. As a long time fan that really sucked, still he decided to steal others work and that's the consequence. Honestly webtoon is a far cry from jump, they just post stuff online, not print them across the country in an extremely famous magazine, I am sure he could push for his own schedule when successful manga artists can do it, the chapters he was making were long and art continuously improved, so rather than pressure from webtoon, I believe he did it from pressure from himself, which in itself is a whole other topic. I hope he takes a good break and comes back with an even better work because I genuinely loved wind breaker .

  10. Basically years of hard work gone. It's sad that people will never be able to read windbreaker and that it will never finish too. I'm thankful for the happy moments windbreaker gave me for the past 3 years.

  11. I think people are being overly precious and moral panicky about tracing.
The way that the author traced some, I assume less than 5% of his drawings, parts of his panels and character poses does not in any way harm the original mangakas. There's no finantial loss, nothing affecting the original creators at all.
He also still had an original story and characters, so the small part that was traced was clearly transformative.

This conversation is silly, if you look at art history tracing and remixing were always a thing and it's not at all a new fenomena.
The idea that creatives main merity is in creating completely original pieces is very naive.
I agree that it should not be a career ending offence, sure it should not be done as it's against the terms in the contract of the publisher but it should not completely deprive the creators of their means or living. It's really cruel to do that when their main crime was being cringe and hurt no one.
