With Superman & the DCU soaring at the Global Boxoffice + Peacemaker Season 2 on the horizon, Andrew & Tara RETURN to their DCEU Marathon giving their Shazam! Reaction, Recap, Commentary, Analysis & Spoiler Review!!
Andrew Gordon & Tara Erickson react to the electrifying 2018 DC Extended Universe film Shazam!, directed by David F. Sandberg (Lights Out, Annabelle: Creation). A refreshing blend of superhero action and heartfelt comedy, Shazam! follows 14-year-old Billy Batson (Asher Angel – Andi Mack, High School Musical: The Musical: The Series), a foster kid who is granted the ability to transform into an adult superhero (Zachary Levi – Chuck, Tangled) by the ancient wizard Shazam (Djimon Hounsou – Gladiator, Guardians of the Galaxy). With the help of his foster brother Freddy Freeman (Jack Dylan Grazer – It, Luca), Billy must learn to harness his newfound powers while navigating teenage life in a grown-up’s body.
The film’s main villain, Dr. Thaddeus Sivana, is played by Mark Strong (Kingsman, Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy), a man corrupted by the Seven Deadly Sins and bent on stealing Shazam’s powers. As Billy embraces his heroic destiny, he discovers the importance of family and teamwork, especially when his foster siblings—played by Grace Caroline Curry, Meagan Good, Michelle Borth, Ross Butler, Adam Brody, and D.J. Cotrona—transform into a team of adult superheroes in one of the film’s most crowd-pleasing, highly searched moments: the Shazam Family reveal. Packed with hilarious training montages, heartfelt family dynamics, and high-stakes action—especially the final battle at a winter carnival—Shazam! stands out as one of the most joyful entries in the DCEU.

  1. 1:00:51 Andrew this scene was from the legion of superheroes cartoon Clark Kent did this as well and bouncing boy helped him out and the other legion when they finally realized he was Superman.

  2. 28:00 Strength, speed, and invulnerability-wise, Shazam (nee Captain Marvel) is in the same weight class as Superman. Their fights in the comics go back to the early 70s and are almost as traditional as races between Superman and the Flash are. Shazam doesn't have Superman's range of sensory powers, but he makes up for it with the Wisdom of Solomon, not that there was much evidence of that here. (For that matter, the same goes for Black Adam and Superman, in terms of physical prowess; Adam's more dangerous than Shazam or Superman, on average, because he's more ruthless and more brutal, never ever holding back, which Superman and Shazam both often do.)

  3. Man I just really need to start skipping these check-ins with Andrew right now, my awkward man is just dealing with some s**t 😅 flies man, wtf!?

  4. Only problem I had with this movie is they played the whole new to being a superhero trope!!!! In the comics and cartoons he picked it up way faster . They made him a idiotic for too long

  5. Yknow it's funny: with your retrospective of this version of the DCU, I realize now that this was my absolute favorite installment.

-it's not bogged down by its universe building. It instead uses the greater lore as a world-building canvas for its own personal story.

-beyond its stakes, beyond its scope, it's a deeply personal story, the themes of which are more eloquently stated in the comments and elsewhere.

-the cast is stellar, with chemistry abound and every member understanding their role in the ensemble. Performances are top notch throughout.

-through the 80's style montages mixed with 2010's trends as a singular example: it is both a product of its place in time and society, as well as having genuine moments of timelessness. Few films can find this balance.

-even with times where it seems like it's two different movies (a coming of age comedy and an over the top thriller/horror film), it understands pacing and tone, and knows both when to separate them and also when to blend them.

-it comes out the other side of MAJOR studio interference still being (arguably) a passable-good film by audience and critic standards.

All of this considered, I personally can't imagine a MOMENT, much less a full film, that touches my soul and moves me (sometimes to tears) in the DCEU like Shazam does multiple times.

Maybe I'm in the minority but…this film truly is something special. ♥️🤘🏼

  6. When you said," How are they gonna explain that to the authorities or the coroner?" Ummm , there wasn't anything left for a coroner to examine, for 1! And for 2, all you need is a dustpan, and there iant anything the authorities would have to investigate , except if someone reports her missing is RP or in HQ! LOL

  7. This movie is really underappreciated. It's no masterpiece, but it is FUN and has heart. It plays to everyone that as a kid felt unloved and/or helpless. Yeah, the tone is still somewhat off somehow, but I don't know what could have been done to correct that. Just take it at face value, a fun, family friendly flick.

  8. PHUCK that MAGA bum! 😡 @RealRejects Why are y’all even giving that dude that the time of day? He actually thought voting for Trump was more important that saving his acting career, he literally wanted Musk to not fire Trump supporting fed workers, but everyone else could go! 😡

  9. I am past halfway into the video and suddenly I realized his shirt isn't a Superman shirt and a button-down on top of it. It was all printed on. God ><

  10. 19:16 i can't help but notice tara is always most of the time annoyed by andrew's enthusiasm about certain things when he brings up something and all, andrew is such a sweet soul and he's always bringing up something which is very interesting
i love this guy he's awesome dude, been introduced to him through cinedesi then been watching every single reaction he is in

  11. The journey of the character (Captain Marvel) now known as Shazam is very complicated. Look it up! DC basically gave Marvel the copyright to the Name (Captain Marvel) to Marvel for FREE! DC could have sold the rights to the name for Millions, but NO!
