  1. Bro. If you’ve watched a few of these, you’ll see the drummer typically do a full listen through of the song without drums just to get a feel for the song structure. Chad just goes right in, first listen. It’s crazy. Dude is one of the best drummers on the planet, for real. He’s been drumming for like 40 years. Full time gig with the Red Hot Chilli Peppers.

When he say a “3”, he’s talking about the timing of the song. A LOT of songs are typically 4/4. This is a 3/4 beat on this song. Killer reaction bro.

  2. My buddy learned to play guitar like this and he's awesome. He plays by ear he'll just listen to a song and pick up and can play it or at least after a couple tries. Never took a lesson in his life.

  3. Yo I wanted to tag y’all onto this, glad y’all are reacting to this. This was tight, I love the musicality of these drummers especially this one.

  4. One of the things you Black Pegasus have mentioned in terms to rap is they get so zoned in they are in flow state, if you look at the drummers face it def looks like he is in a flow state and calculating what’s going to come next. It’s amazing

  5. A song being in “three” is shorthand for “3/4” – meaning there are three quarter notes in each measure. While technically different in feel, it’s also commonly known as “6/8” (six eights notes per measure). The feel of the two are different and The Kill is theoretically in 6/8, but it’s not incorrect to say it’s in 3. That said, it’s simply a way to count beats. It’s exceptionally important for all musicians, but especially so for percussionists to put the “feel” in the right place. Also, knowing that information doesn’t make it easy. Chad Smith is a musical genius through and through.

  6. Said it before and i will say it again, Chad Smith is one of the best drummers ever. The one thing that has always held him back is RHCP. His fills, licks and little personal touch are super technical yet so elegant and simple. Chad and Abe Cunningham from Deftones are fucking freaks with the sticks and skins. Check out Passenger from Deftones album White Pony. That song is such a hard track to replicate from a drum point of view due to Abe's insane play style.

  7. It's a 3 count so you basically just say 1, 2, 3 over and over to hit the beat or as I learned in band 1 la li, 2 la li, 3 la li and over and over.

  8. "It's in 3" means the song is in 3/4 time. Most songs are in 4/4 time. It's how musicians count. You would count 1, 2, 3, 4, 1, 2, 3, 4, etc. with each beat. But because this song is in 3, you would count 1, 2, 3, 1, 2, 3, etc. Try it yourself. Then try it in 4… it won't work in 4 you'll discover. At 7:00 in your video, notice how Chad starts feeling the beat with the hi-hat. He's counting. Each beat with the hi-hat you count. So count 1, 2, 3, 1, 2, 3, 1, 2, 3, etc with each beat of the hi-hat.

  9. I think that he did it better, the drum is the heart beat of the song the guitar is the soul glad you saw the stick break. You should get a drum set and try to drum it might make you a better rapper as you said can probably give you new sounds beat wise. Much love hope you and the family are healthy

  10. I was so damn taken back when I saw this. Absolute master in his craft. Honestly saw this video first and thought other drummers just go mid-listen– but obviously everyone does a full listen, writes notes, and then goes for it. I think that shows how crazy this really is. Honestly— I thought his was better version but then I always love live performances better than studio versions.

  11. 3 is the time signature in which the song is played, he's such an experienced drummer that after figuring out the time signature he was able to play along with it. He slipped up a couple times but who wouldn't

  12. When we has active listening, he heard the track but without drums. He came up with absolutely 100% of the drums in his rendition.

  13. Chad is an insane drummer. Thats the difference in craft in knowing timing and how to drum. He drums this better than the original

  14. The song is in 3/4 instead of being in 4/4 like most popular music is. It could also be considered to be in 6/8. If it is 3/4, he is playing the quarter note on the hihat or the cymbal depending on the section and playing the backbeat on the first beat of every second bar. Or if he perceives it in 6/8, then are he playing 8th notes on the hihat or cymbal, depending on the section and playing the back beat on count 4. But no matter what, it is considered to be a time signature based on 3.

  15. When he refers to it being in "3" it means its 3 bars in a 4 bar measure, i.e 3/4 time. So the beat restarts when you hit 3 in the count (1, 2, 3 – 1, 2, 3) instead of (1, 2, 3, 4 – 1, 2, 3, 4). So when you get that the whole song is in 3/4 time you can pretty much improv and add all the flourishes you want around it. The fact that he can understand the measure and then do all the crazy technical stuff around it is what makes him an expert. First reaction i've seen from you, great stuff my man!
