In this episode of “I Was There”, VICE meets with Ramona Africa, one of the only survivors of the police bombing in a residential neighborhood of Philadelphia in 1985. The bombing was a result of a conflict between the Philadelphia police department and the MOVE organization, the black liberation group in which Ramona belonged. The targeted house was the headquarters of the MOVE group, which had garnered complaints from their neighbors in the predominantly Black neighborhood.

MOVE was evicted and they refused to leave. Their neighbors complained about how dirty they were. They were not getting along with their neighbors like she said. I hope I never have to deal with neighbors like them.

About 8 years ago, there was a rally in Newark NJ, it had a collection of actors in it.
The group of Luis Farrakhan members were in suit and ties providing security.
Unitarian volunteers were scouting the crowd for potential white trouble makers, I was surreptitiously questioned about why I was filming , and a number of MOVE members were there giving speeches.
The police had a drone they were flying nearby but in general kept their distance.
What I can tell you is this, my opinion and some details I took note of.
1) The speeches were extreamly inflamitory, IF I remember correctly they involved incitement to violence against police etcetera.
2) For this comment you have to read between the lines and think in context of number 1 …
The Mayor of Newark, Ras Baraka did not show up to make a speech at the rally, and if he wanted to he could have (he choose not to) , but rather a relative of Ras Baraka made a speech.
3) The highlight of the rally was a little girl singing.
4) It ended peacably.
My takeaway from this was two fold and maybe not the intent of the rally.
#1 Don't let anyone including Vice convince you these people were mear victims, the were such stauch and vocal advocates of violence against the police (in general) I could not see how I could ever publish the video on youtube.
#2 Just like ANTIFA in Portland, Newark has a (I think small) component of simmering underclass on the verge of riot.
DON'T LET VICE VIRTUE SIGNAL HERE.
How ever bad it was back then, these remaining MOVE members are taking vitriolic hatred into the present.
