⁣EXODUS – Chapter 2 – KJV – Audio & Text with Headings

Summary of Exodus Chapter 2

Exodus Chapter 2 marks the birth and early life of Moses, the future deliverer of Israel, and sets the stage for his divine mission. The chapter can be divided into three main sections:

1. The Birth and Rescue of Moses (2:1–10)
A Levite couple (later identified as Amram and Jochebed in Exodus 6:20) gives birth to a son during Pharaoh’s decree to drown all Hebrew male infants in the Nile.

The mother hides the baby for three months but eventually places him in a waterproof basket (ark of bulrushes) and sets it among the reeds of the Nile.

Pharaoh’s daughter discovers the baby while bathing, recognizes him as a Hebrew child, and takes pity on him.

The baby’s sister (Miriam, though unnamed here) arranges for their own mother to nurse him, and Pharaoh’s daughter later adopts him, naming him Moses (meaning “drawn out of the water”).

2. Moses’ Flight to Midian (2:11–22)
As an adult, Moses witnesses the oppression of his people and kills an Egyptian taskmaster beating a Hebrew slave.

The next day, he tries to mediate a fight between two Hebrews, but they question his authority, revealing that his murder of the Egyptian is known.

Fearing Pharaoh’s wrath, Moses flees to Midian.

At a well, he defends Jethro’s (Reuel’s) seven daughters from shepherds and waters their flock.

In gratitude, Jethro (Reuel) invites Moses to stay, and Moses marries his daughter Zipporah. They have a son named Gershom (“a stranger there”), reflecting Moses’ exile.

3. God Hears Israel’s Cry (2:23–25)
The Pharaoh of Moses’ time dies, but Israel’s suffering continues, and they cry out to God.

God remembers His covenant with Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob and takes notice of their plight, setting the stage for His intervention through Moses.

Key Themes:
Divine Providence: God protects Moses from death, positioning him for a future leadership role.

Moses’ Character: His sense of justice is evident, though impulsive (killing the Egyptian).

Preparation for Deliverance: Moses’ exile in Midian becomes a time of preparation before his calling in Exodus 3.

God’s Faithfulness: Despite silence, God is attentive to Israel’s suffering and will act according to His covenant.

This chapter bridges Israel’s oppression to the coming redemption, introducing the central human leader, Moses, while emphasizing God’s sovereign plan.
